Chapter 2 0645 hours, Cornerian time CDF Hangar Bay 27 "Looks like you guys are a little early.", Commander McCloud noted. She paid meticulous attention to detail--it was a leftover from her days as a fighter pilot. "First, though, I'd like to make note of your fighters. It seems that only one is a standard-issue Arwing. What of the other two? Are they custom designs?" Proudly, Wolfhound answered, "Yes ma'am, Commander. I built that one myself a year and a half ago.", pointing to the black fighter with red and gold trim. "What's the specs? It looks like a modified Mark-II Arwing.", Commander McCloud inquired. "Yes, it is, Commander. It carries five laser cannons, double shields, an enhanced hyperdrive, and dual bomb launch tubes, each tube carrying ten bombs." "I see. Carries more firepower that a flight of Arwings. But, I've learned from experience that a fighter is only as good as its pilot, and that's what I'm training you all to be. Understood?" "Yes, ma'am!", the three cadets answered. "Who's the one with the standard Arwing?", Fara asked. "I am, Commander.", Adrian spoke. "I suppose the other fighter is yours, Cadet Ross. Care to tell me about it?" "Well...not right now.", Jadis barked. "I'll find out later, then...what in blazes is that?", Commander McCloud yelped as two more fighters buzzed overhead, landing by the hangar. Both fighters were standard Arwings. Fara dusted herself off--after having to duck--and smiled a little out of embarassment. "Oh, I forgot to tell you. These are the others who were just transferred to this group. May I introduce Cadet Cordy Cheetah and Cadet Fara Lightyears." The two new arrivals walked up to Commander McCloud. "Cadets Cheetah and Lightyears, reporting for duty." "At ease, Cadets. Welcome to the club, figuratively speaking." Although she was a brilliant instructor, she also preferred to be the friendly type with her new recruits. "All right, pilots. Time to begin your flight training. Get to your fighters. Today, we'll practice basic maneuvers." ----------------------------------------------------------- 0715 hours, Cornerian time CDF Pilot Training Complex "OK. Everyone, listen up. You're going to learn basic maneuvers today.", Commander McCloud spoke over the comm. "Wolfhound, you'll start the run." "Affirmative, Commander.", Wolfhound acknowledged. "Your task is to fly through ALL the rings ahead. You'll have to climb, dive, bank, and roll to get them all. Let's get to it, then. Wolfhound, you're clear to start." Wolfhound punched the boosters on his fighter as he approached the first ring. He slipped through the first ring effortlessly, then climbed sharply to get the next three. After that, he banked sharply to his left to hit two, then dove to get four, and finally rolled hard right to hit the final one. "Perfect score, Cadet. All right, Cadet Coyote, you're next." The other four cadets completed the course with the same results as Wolfhound. "I'm quite impressed, guys.", Commander McCloud spoke. "The last team to do that well was Star Fox." She paused for a minute--the name made her think of her husband, Fox. "All right team, let's...." She stopped for a minute as she registered five enemy blips on her scanner. "Wait a minute...there aren't supposed to be any..." Her statement was finished for her as the enemy fighters began firing on everything in sight. "Evasive maneuvers, NOW!", she ordered. The five fighters broke formation and each tracked one of the enemy. Wolfhound was busy trying to shake a fighter from his wing. "I could use a little help here, guys!", he screamed into his comlink. A blue and black fighter shot past Wolfhound's aft side and blasted the fighter into debris. "That's one you owe me.", a harsh voice answered. "Jadis?", Wolfhound asked. "Yeah, it's me. Now remember to do your job.", Jadis barked, then went after a fighter on Fara Lightyears' tail. Gee, and I thought I wouldn't be able to trust her..., Wolfhound thought as he noticed a fighter coming straight for Commander McCloud's Arwing. Five blue bolts shot from his fighter, obliterating the trailing enemy. "Thanks, Cadet. It's not often that I find myself being tailed." "Anytime, Commander.", Wolfhound answered proudly. Soon the battle was over. Five minutes later, all of the fighters had landed back at the hangar. "Status reports, team.", Fara ordered. "I'm all right.", Wolfhound answered. "I'm OK, I guess.", Jadis snarled. "Everything's A-OK.", Adrian stated. "Fine.", Cordy replied. "I'm fine, too.", Fara Lightyears answered. "Now, the big question--where did those fighters come from?", Commander McCloud inquired. "I don't know.", Wolfhound answered. "Well, it looks like Corneria is under attack--again. When will we finally be rid of all the remains of Andross' army?", Commander McCloud stated, exasperated. ----------------------------------------------------------- END OF CHAPTER 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------
