Chapter 5 1115 hours, Cornerian Standard Time 100 kilometers off the starboard side of the C.D.F.C Vindicator..... A lone blue and black fighter sailed through the stars, its destination unknown even to its pilot. I have no idea where I'm going--as long as it's anywhere but here... Lt. Jadis Ross thought as she flew onward to who knew where. She was still feeling hurt from the exchange between herself and Wolfhound. How...how could he...?, she thought. No one, but NO ONE, would know about my past, and he would understand least of all! "I...I have to get away from here...", she muttered to herself as she dropped the Fire Wolf into hyperspace. ----------------------------------------------------------- "Adrian, Cordy, have either one of you seen Jadis around?", Wolfhound inquired. "I haven't seen her since the service this morning..." "I dunno.", Adrian replied. "Me neither.", Cordy answered. "Hmmmm...I wonder if she has any ill feelings over what happened last night?" "Could be....", Adrian answered, but Wolfhound didn't hear as his comm unit beeped. "Wolfhound here. Go ahead." "Wolfhound, this is Captain McCloud. I've just registered an unauthorized fighter launch. It answers ID checks as the Fire Wolf." "That's...that's Jadis' ship. How long ago did it launch?", Wolfhound inquired, surprised. "About five minutes ago." "And its last heading?" "Unknown. She didn't even register a flight plan." "OK. I'll go look for her. Wolfhound out." "All right team, we have a mission to do. Any volunteers?", Wolfhound asked, though he hadn't intended it to be a choice. "I'm going. After all, I've known her a long time.", Adrian answered. "Me too.", Cordy replied. "I don't want to see her get killed like Fara did." At that statement, Wolfhound paused. She's right--we can't afford to lose another pilot, and Jadis is one of our best... "True, that. All right, team. Let's go!" ----------------------------------------------------------- The Fire Wolf dropped out of hyperspace in the middle of nowhere. "All right, then. Where to now?", Jadis muttered to herself as she checked her bearings. Her thoughts still weren't entirely clear. No...I would have never made it there...After that day... Her mind drifted back to that fateful day on the third moon of Fortuna. I can't shake this guy...no, get out of there...too late, G-Diffuser's gone...the base defenses are too strong... "DAMN IT, WHY ME???", Jadis shouted over her own thoughts. "Why must I always return to that time...I lost my entire squadron...." And since that day, you've kept running, my child... a voice whispered into her mind. "No..it can't be...Dad?", Jadis whispered. Yes, my dear child. You know, since the day I was killed, you've kept running from your past. It's as if you're afraid to revisit those horrors. I realize life was hard after your mother died, but sometimes life can be that way. After I was killed, you stayed with some of my friends, joined Andross, then ran and formed your own squadron. When they were wiped out, you ran and never looked back. And you're still running to this day... the voice spoke in her mind, softly. "But...I could never be a team member...after that...", Jadis whispered. Yes, you can. But you must first turn and confront your fears... "How? I...I don't know if I can, after all this time...", she whispered. I cannot tell you. You must find out on your own, my child. But, you must first learn to trust yourself. Follow your heart, Jadis... Then, the voice fell silent. "Great, I'm going totally nuts here.", Jadis growled. Suddenly, a dozen enemy blips appeared on her screen. "What the...", she gasped. "All right then,", she said as instinct took over, "it's time to fight!" Even as she rolled the fighter to evade the first shots, she wished--just this once--that the rest of Wolfpack Squadron were here to help. ----------------------------------------------------------- 1145 hours, Cornerian Standard Time In hyperspace transit... "OK, guys. I've managed to track Jadis' heading. If my calculations are correct, we should be at her position in about a minute.", Adrian reported. "All right. We may be dropping right into the middle of a firefight, so be ready for anything, team." Wolfhound ordered. "Right.", said Cordy. The three fighters dropped out of hyperspace right on top of a running battle. "Looks like you were right, Wolfhound.", Cordy quipped. Twelve against one...those are hardly fair odds. Let's show Lt. Ross that Wolfpack Squadron looks out for its own. Everyone, let's rock and roll!" Actually, Wolfhound's assessment was only partially correct--it was nine to one odds by the time they arrived. Yep, she's a hell of a pilot... he thought as two fighters broke from Jadis to face him. "Don't you guys KNOW who you're up against? Well, you know what they say about messing with the best...", he taunted on the comm as he blew through the two fighters and turned them into fireballs. "I've got a fighter dead on my tail!", Cordy shouted over the comm. It was quickly wiped out by a blue and black blur of a fighter. "Nice of you guys to show up!", Jadis snapped over the comm. "Where did you think you were going without telling anyone?", Wolfhound replied, annoyed. "I'll explain later. Right now, we have a battle to finish." Five minutes later, it was over. This time, everyone would live to tell the tale. "Adrian, check for any more fighters.", Wolfhound ordered. "Already have.", came the reply. "None there." "OK. Let's get back to the Vindicator. Jadis, you and I really have to talk..." ----------------------------------------------------------- END OF CHAPTER 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------
