Chapter 6 1400 hours, Cornerian Standard Time In the rec room of the Vindicator... "You wanted to talk, Wolfhound. So, what is it you want to say to me?", Jadis snapped. "Well...I'm not going to cut corners here...", Wolfhound started to say. "Don't, then. Just get to the point.", the white wolf retorted. "OK, then. That stunt you pulled is grounds for a court-martial. But, I'm not going to press charges. I don't believe in pressing offenses against good pilots.", Wolfhound stated. "So? What does that have to do with anything?", she snapped. "Well...just wait a sec, will you, Lieutenant?", Wolfhound asked as he spoke into his comm unit. "Lt. Coyote and Lt. Cheetah, please report to the rec room, immediately." Three minutes later, the other two pilots of Wolfpack Squadron arrived as ordered. "What is it, Wolfhound?", Cordy asked. "I wanted to give you guys these--I finally got the squadron patches today. That's why I was looking for Lt. Ross earlier.", Wolfhound answered as he handed each pilot their patch. "Congratulations, guys--we're now official." Adrian looked at his patch. It was a black wolf on a dark blue background. In the upper right portion of the patch was a single star. "Hey, Wolfhound, what's the star supposed to mean?", Cordy asked. "It's..it's in memory to Fara. She deserved this patch as much as anyone else on the team. After her death, I redesigned the patches." "Oh...I see...", Cordy whispered. "Let's hope that I don't have to add another star to that field.", Wolfhound stated. "Well, you almost had to...", Adrian stated, but Jadis cut him off with a piercing glare. "Don't push it, Adrian.", Jadis growled. "Jadis, what you did was foolish. What if you got killed?", Adrian pleaded with his friend. Of all the squadron members, Adrian knew the white wolf best. "Well, you guys wouldn't miss me.", Jadis retorted. "Let me set you straight, Lt. Ross.", Wolfhound said with an edge of anger in his voice. "Any one of us would have come for you if you were in trouble. Unlike your past teams, this squadron looks out for its own. So, you're just as important to the team as I, Adrian, or Cordy." "Or me, for that mattter...', a voice spoke up. Wolfhound started to turn around. "Who's there?", he asked. "Major Darius Starfire, reporting for assignment, sir." "You don't have to call me 'sir'--you outrank me, anyway.", Wolfhound stated. "Well, you are the CO of Wolfpack Squadron.", Darius replied. "On whose orders are you assigned to this squadron?", Wolfhound inquired. "My sister's. She thought that you could use the help, after you lost Lt. Lightyears and all..." "Well, I suppose we are undermanned right now. Welcome to Wolfpack Squadron, Major. I just happened to have an extra squadron patch just in case.", Wolfhound told Darius as he handed him his patch. "Great, another new member...", Jadis noted sarcastically. "That's enough, Lieutenant. I expect you to accord him the same respect you would want for yourself. Is that clear?", Wolfhound asked. "Yes, sir.", Jadis growled. "OK, then. Adrian, Cordy, and Darius, you're all dismissed." "What about me?", Jadis inquired. "I don't believe we were finished, Lieutenant Ross. As I said, you're a fine pilot. I'm putting you in for the squadron's executive officer." "After all that I did, you'd still trust me to be the XO? Wolfhound, I think you're crazy." "Well, maybe I am. Or...maybe I see in you a potential that you can't see in yourself." For once, Jadis looked surprised. "What do you mean?" "You once commanded your own squadron..." "A squadron that I am the sole survivor of! Why me?", Jadis snapped. "Because, you have that leadership ability, but you don't seem to want to use it. Jadis, if I didn't accept command of Wolfpack Squadron, they would probably have given it to you." "I wouldn't have accepted it, either. I'm...not cut out to be a leader...", she spoke. "Oh, but I think you are. You just need to learn to act like one. So, do you accept?", Wolfhound inquired. For a minute, she hesitated. The voice echoed again in her mind. Follow your heart, Jadis.... "OK. I accept. So, what now?", Jadis answered. Before Wolfhound could answer, Adrian and Cordy rushed in. "Wolfhound, there's something I think you should see." ----------------------------------------------------------- 1445 hours, Cornerian Standard Time Fighter bay #3, C.D.F.C Vindicator.... "So, what is it, Adrian?", Jadis asked. "Remember when Wolfhound asked me to scan for enemy fighters? Well, I didn't find any, but I ran a check on my sensor data and found something else. It also made me curious as to why they would send a dozen fighters after one ship.", Adrian replied. "And, what did you find?", Cordy inquired. "There's something else there. Something that they don't want anyone to find out about." "A secret base, perhaps?", Wolfhound questioned. "Maybe. Or, it could be a new weapon. Either way, we have to know what it is." "Agreed.", Wolfhound stated. "So what do we do?" "I dunno.", Adrian replied, puzzled. "You're supposed to be the leader." "I guess we go and find out what it is they're protecting, then.", Jadis suggested. "All right then. All pilots to your fighters. We scramble in two minutes." ----------------------------------------------------------- 1458 hours, Cornerian Standard Time 100,000 kilometers from Meteo.... "Here they come!", Darius shouted over the comm, his Avenger-class fighter ready for battle. "All right, team. Everyone pick a target. Here we go!", Wolfhound ordered as the five fighters charged toward the enemy. "Looks like we've got company, here!", Cordy shouted. "I'm picking up four more blips coming hard aft...wait, they're Arwings! It's Star Fox!" "Looks like you could use some help, guys.", Fox McCloud spoke. "Can we assist?" "Right on, Fox. Jump right in.", Wolfhound quipped. Forty-six enemy fighters were currently engaging the nine Cornerians--and more were arriving. "We're outmanned and outgunned here, Fox!", Falco squawked. "Don't worry--the Vindicator is following right behind us. It'll be here...soon, I hope.", Fox answered. "Where are all those fighters coming from?", Jadis asked. As if to answer her question, a massive ship appeared before the team. "What the...Evasive maneuvers, NOW!", Wolfhound ordered. Before he could move, though, a tractor beam locked onto his fighter. "I'm caught! Jadis, get the team out of here, NOW!" "But...", Jadis replied, a hint of worry in her voice. As she spoke, the Vindicator dropped out of hyperspace about a kilometer to port and began firing its lasers. "Jadis, that's an order. Get the team back home. You'll find a way....", Wolfhound stated as the transmission was cut off. "NO, DAMN IT!!!!", Jadis shouted as she pounded the comm panel in fury. "Wolfpack Squadron, return to base, now!", she barked. The day I always feared has arrived... Jadis thought as she turned back towards the Vindicator. And, I don't know what to do.... The Vindicator jumped into hyperspace, leaving one of its own behind. Jadis knew that they would be back. "I swear that I will return..." ----------------------------------------------------------- END OF CHAPTER 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------
